ATTEN-TION!

Luke 6:20-26

Fret not, because of those who appear to be living life a little (or a lot) better than you. Worry not, about men who seemingly have the upper hand concerning matters of finances and other resources. Mind not those things which the world considers as “fancy”, or “flashy”. Don’t lose heart, when your life is full of sadness and pain, while those around you are filled with laughter. Stand strong, even when men hate you, and literally defame your good name. Walk with your head held high, in the midst of snakes, fakes, and ravenous wolves. Be strong, and very courageous, while facing trials and temptations. Get excited, in those moments when you get rejected from the crowd, and appear to be left all alone. While the world makes attempts to keep you in the fog negativity, God will give you strength to endure all of their ploys and distractions. Not only will God keep you in perfect peace during hard times, but He will reward you greatly in Heaven.

Those who seem to be living the “good life” here on the earth, and willfully reject God, will only enjoy good until their death. After this life, comes the judgment, and every man and woman who rejected God, will mourn and weep throughout all eternity, as they spend their next life in that horrible, bottomless pit.

Saints, be encouraged, and continue fighting the good fight. The battle belongs to God, and He’s already won the victory! Soon, and very soon, all our troubles, worries, and struggles will be over, but until then… fight well!

Gone Too Far… Smh

John 13:31-35

This lesson’s text is filled with so many teaching points, that I would be writing for days expounding upon them all. Instead, I prefer to bring your attention to verse 31. At first glance, many would skip to verse 32, without noticing a valuable lesson written in plain sight in this verse.

Jesus was the most true, honest, reliable, and dependable friend anyone could have ever asked for. His obvious connection to God should have been a dead giveaway of the character one could expect from sharing experiences with Him, and those who shared the most experiences with Jesus during His ministry were, His disciples. Jesus selected 12 ordinary men, and empowered them to perform some of history’s most extraordinary works. Can you imagine, walking, talking, laughing, crying, and enjoying all the experiences of life, but in the presence of Christ? I can’t fathom how that would feel, but I am certain that every disciple who followed after Jesus, was changed from the moment they gave up their past, to the very instant they saw His power in action.

Although Jesus proved to His followers that He indeed was sent by God to save the world, this amazing truth did little to influence a man who shared in those amazing works and experiences with the Son of God. Judas Iscariot, was handpicked by Jesus, to become one of the chosen disciples. In the same way as the other 11, Judas also left all, to follow Christ, but his experience was on a level his brethren knew nothing about. If Jesus had not known the thoughts of Judas, I’m apt to believe, He would have carried Himself a different way. But, from the beginning, to his betrayal, Jesus knew full well, the heart of Judas had been hardened to the point of no return. It’s sad to fathom how a man can become so consumed with the cares of this world, that even God in the flesh, could not influence him to change.

Judas had gone too far, and although he was blessed with power to do things ordinary men could only dream of, he couldn’t let go of his lust for the world, which caused him to make the most devastating decision of his life. Yes, God’s plan was that Christ be sacrificed, but maybe… just maybe, it could have been triggered by someone other than Jesus’ disciple.

No man will ever face betrayal on a level as Jesus did, but I’m 175 percent sure, that someone in your “circle of friends” has been holding a blade, and waiting for the opportunity to stab you in the back. Unlike the average human, Jesus showed love to Judas, despite knowing He was never really true to his confession.

Will you continue to love those who you know hate your guts, but haven’t been bold enough to confess it yet? Those in your life who have gone too far, and allowed the opinions of others to dictate their perspective of who you are, can you still smile, hug, and shower them with the love of Christ?

After Judas had left the table, Jesus said to those who remained faithful, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (vs. 35). Judas betrayed the Son of God, yet the Son never stopped loving him…and the Son will never stop loving you, but you must give the same love to one another.

Keep On Teaching

Mark 6:1-6

I wrote a blog nearly a year ago concerning the dangers of familiarity, and how many people have misjudged, and dishonored some whom they should have given more respect to. For example, growing up with siblings who eventually become famous, doesn’t change the fact that they are still your brother or sister. Therefore, you wouldn’t see them as the world would, and probably could care less about their fame. On the other hand, those who only know of famous people from listening to their music, or watching them on the big screen, tend to have a greater appreciation for their work.

After hearing about all the incredible miracles Jesus had performed outside of His hometown, from casting demons out of some, to raising others from the dead, it’s sad to know that those in His own community refused to accept the fact that He indeed was the Son of God. The text mentions, “And he marvelled because of their unbelief” (vs. 6a). After touring many different lands, spreading the goodness of His Father, Jesus no doubt expected to return home with a more appreciative welcome. Those He blessed while He journeyed through various lands were extremely grateful for the love Jesus had freely shown to them, but those in His own country could do no more than criticize, and doubt who He really was. This was so disheartening to point that Jesus could do no mighty works there, except lay His hands on a few sick folk, and heal them. Although the people in His town proved to be unthankful, Jesus made certain to not allow the people’s unbelief, keep Him from teaching.

While we live to please God, we’ll also experience doubt and unbelief from those we assume have our best interests at heart. But, after overcoming the hurt and pain of those you thought would support you, don’t allow their unbelief to keep you from spreading the goodness of the Gospel.

The Hearts Of Men

Mark 7:17-23

“Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. And doth thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee? Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one” (Job 14:1-4). These were words spoken by Job, who was struggling to understand his extremely uncomfortable circumstances, but he also realized the importance of trusting God, even when life seems to be unfair.

At the start of the gate, we are born into this world at a disadvantage. Because of sin, men are born unclean, and Job recognized that it’s impossible to bring something clean, from an unclean thing. Knowing this fact should provoke the church to cling tight to God, because it’s easy to veer off into the path of unrighteousness, and attemp to walk without God’s leading.

By default, men are carnal in their thinking. In fact, the very heart of a man, without being filled with the Spirit of God, will eventually entertain areas of ungodliness that will defile their very essence. Such areas include, but are not limited to, evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye (sometimes, just the way you look at a person can come off as pure evil), blasphemy, pride, and foolishness. The text continues to read, “All these evil things come from within, and defile the man” (vs. 23).

It’s impossible to live a good life, or the popular “your best life now”, without God, because the flesh will never be satisfied, until it’s evil urges and desires have been fulfilled. Guard your heart against all things evil, and trust God to keep your heart filled with His love and grace. “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23 KJV).

How Bad Do You Want It?

Proverbs 2:1-11

When we desire something, like we really really want it, we’ll go through great lengths to obtain it. A man who yearns to be with a specific woman, will do all he can to study her, so that he can do all the things she likes, in hopes of winning her favor. Men have been known for buying women cars, expensive clothing, and even jewelry, hoping they’ll eventually fall for them. Real women desire things that are more fulfilling, rather than material things, but men still try nonetheless. Another example is, how college scouts go over and beyond, to try and convince high school student-athletes to enroll in their school, and athletic program. They sacrifice time and money, to schedule visits to meet and greet with the child, and their family. Some have even been fined and put in jail, from taking risks like buying homes and cars, in order to convince the family that their university is worth attending. People have done strange things, to prove that what they desire, is worth fighting for. Unfortunately, most of those things offered little to no eternal value. If men sought diligently to learn the knowledge of God, more than they do worldly things, their lives would produce entirely different outcomes.

Many who claim to be Christians, struggle with understanding their purpose in life. One reason this happens is, they neglect to handle the first steps in growing, and maturing in God. The Bible teaches that we are to incline our ears unto wisdom, hide the commandments of God in our hearts, and seek after knowledge and understanding wholeheartedly. When it comes to understanding things like the stock market, politics, and other worldly interests, men go all out to understand all the juicy details, so they can gain an advantage in obtaining benefits for themselves. But, when it comes to pondering through verses of scripture, to gain a better understanding of what God expects from us, we automatically become lax, and prefer to hear sermons from televangelists, or YouTube. Why is it, when some people read the Bible, they always get sleepy? Hmm… in any case, it’s imperative that we obtain, and utilize the wisdom God gives, so that our souls can be kept, and our bodies preserved.

Do you desire God enough to spend at least an hour per day, meditating on His Word? If not, what is currently taking the place of the time God deserves? Always remember, only what you do for Christ, can impact your eternity in a positive way, but lacking a desire to grow in godliness, proves that the love you should have for God, is being invested in something else.

Selfless Consideration

Romans 15:1-6

In our society, working together is promoted in all areas of business, education, and entertainment. Businesses thrive on increase and productivity, but their success can only go as far as their unified organization allows them to. Teachers work hard to ensure that their students learn and develop the skills required to advance to the next grade level. When done for the right purpose and with right intentions, teachers can impact the lives of their students far beyond their initial expectations. Without unity and togetherness, it would be unwise for any team, of any sport, to attempt to challenge an opponent, because their lack of teamwork would weigh heavily against them, causing them to suffer a great and embarrassing loss. From these examples, it’s safe to presume that working together as a single unit, will always produce better results, than operating from a system of dysfunction.

While teamwork involves all members working together toward a common goal, each individual must exhibit behaviors of humility, compassion, and understanding, in order for the “team” to “work” effectively. In our text, the apostle Paul helps Roman believers grasp a better better understanding of the importance of unity, amongst the body of Christ. Although each member of the body performs different functions, not one area holds more importance than another. The Bible does teach that we are to honor our leaders, and give them respect, but we must not consider our own callings irrelevant, in comparison to theirs.

The church is at its best, when all members perform their duties with all their heart, aiming to give God glory from their lives. Unfortunately, times will arise when those who are weak in faith, may tend to get weighed down by the heaviness of life’s struggles. During these critical moments, those who are strong in the Lord, ought to make haste to cover, protect, edify, and restore those who may fall, because at any moment the enemy could come and sift them as wheat. The Bible doesn’t teach us to be “people pleasers”, but we are commanded to live to please others. In pleasing others, we make ourselves available to lift them up during times when they feel down, supply their needs during seasons of lack, or simply loaning an ear or shoulder for someone to cry on, giving them hope that they’re not alone in the fight of faith.

Straighten Up And Fly Right

Galatians 6:1-10

As a whole, the church should conduct themselves totally opposite of what the world represents. Whether a member of the body of Christ lives in California, China, Sudan, or Germany, all who are deemed as children of God are expected to maintain a standard that is holy, and acceptable unto the Lord, at all times, and in all places.

When the Bible is taught, and the pages of Scripture preached, those who deliver the oracles of God should always do so under the leading of the Holy Spirit. When done this way, the message will always be brought forth as God intended, and the Spirit won’t allow man’s pride to take precedence over God’s intended purpose.

I mentioned the previous statements to establish a grounds for this lesson. In order for the church to remain unified, we must all have equal understanding of the Word of God. God’s Word has been the same since its inspired recording, and its relevance is of the upmost importance to all who are in Christ Jesus. Without God’s Word, there would be no sense of direction or purpose for the church, and we’d be left to traverse the earth on our own wisdom and judgment. Fortunately, God made sure to provide a means by which all men can have equal opportunity to learn, study, and meditate on the things He expects from His people.

In our text, some of the most important principles of holy living are mentioned. The apostle Paul taught the church in Galatia the importance of teamwork, humility, and reaping and sowing. Believers are to stick together in times of good, and not so good. Paul taught that we are to bear one another’s burdens, because doing so fulfills the law of Christ (to love thy neighbor as thyself). All members of Christ’s body are dependent upon each other to function properly, and when one member falls, the others are to restore them with meekness. This is very important, because men are known to point the finger, and make those who fall, feel bad, but they forget that while their pointing their finger at someone who made a mistake, a situation is awaiting them around the corner, to test them in the same area. Christians are to walk in humility at all times, remembering how Jesus carried Himself among those who followed after Him.

Lastly, Paul encouraged the Galatian church that sowing to the Spirit, will bring everlasting life, but sowing to the flesh will reap corruption. The world is expected to sow seeds to their flesh, because they are of their father the devil, but the children of God should always be found investing their time and energy, into building God’s kingdom. Be sure your attitude, behavior, and actions are aligned with God’s expectations, and allow His love to shine through you, as you walk in obedience to His Word.

Just An Average Joe

Acts 6:1-7

“But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:” (Philippians 2:7 KJV). Contrary to popular belief, there was nothing fascinating about Jesus physically, that stood out amongst those He encountered. All the pictures and images of the long hair, blue eyed angelic Jesus, are highly exaggerated, and inaccurate. Not only was Jesus visually an “average Joe”, He made certain to keep a low profile, while focusing all His attention on redistributing the Words that came from His Father, to preach and teach to the world.

“For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.” (Isaiah 53:2 KJV). When God prepared Himself a body, He was wise enough to refrain from molding an image like James Dean, Marlon Brando, Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, Denzel Washington, Idris Elba, and Shemar Moore, because people would more than likely gravitate toward them due to their outer appearance, rather than the message they presented. While it’s good to dress modest, and present ourselves decent while doing the Lord’s work, we should be focused more on increasing the reputation of God, rather than promoting our own.

In our text, the twelve disciples were persistent in their efforts to spread the message of the Gospel, and the more they preached, the more the church grew. Unfortunately, they were unable to balance preaching, and maintaining the well-being of the church, so they decided that it was wise to appoint others to handle the domestic duties of the church, while they preached the Gospel, unhindered. This idea was received well by the church, and they identified seven men, whom they deemed fit to carry out the daily ministration. Rather than make known the physical attributes of the chosen men, the Bible was sure to acknowledge that Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas were men with strong spiritual attributes. What an honor it is, to be acknowledged by others, not for vain and irrelevant characteristics, but for traits that are relevant to the God of all creation.

Is the reputation you seek to gain, the same as God’s, or do you flaunt looks, money, and other things to gain the attention of men? Do you receive the message of the Gospel the same from all God’s people, or do you tend to give more attention to those who have mega churches, and may be more fit to star in Hollywood films? “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”(Colossians 3:17 KJV). “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;” (Colossians 3:23 KJV).

Seek not to gain vain glory, but desire that the body of Christ grow together. Whatever God called you to do, give it your best effort, and be proud of rendering your reasonable services to the Lord.

You Forced My Hand…

Jeremiah 22:20-23

When parents train their children during the early stages of their development, they are in essence, preparing them for life, when they get older. Oftentimes, children aren’t overjoyed when commanded to do those things that may seem unnecessary at first, but as they mature, they’ll eventually discover, all the hard lessons and training from their parents, will prove beneficial during their adult years. The more a child listens and obeys the teachings of their parents, the greater the chances their lives will benefit from a solid foundation of discipline and sound doctrine. Conversely, when children rebel, and assume they can progress through life without proper guidance, they’ll no doubt be in for a rude awakening. The Bible even teaches that when children honor and obey their parents, they’ll live long, and prosperous lives on the earth.

The theme of this lesson stems from the passage in the book of Jeremiah, which contrasted the lives of king Josiah, and his son Jehoiakim.  While it’s ideal for respectable parents to raise children who also turn out respectable as well, there are unfortunate times when the children of good parents stray toward the ungodly path. Have you ever heard the phrase, “preacher’s kids are the worst”? Well, that’s not confirmed in every case, but there is truth in that statement. Typically, leaders are strong, firm, and committed to following God, so the devil tries to get to the leader, through their children. King Josiah raised his family to fear and reverence God, and led the people according to the same standard. But, his son chose to live his own way, and shun those things he was taught from his youth. Unfortunately, Jehoiakim’s rebellion forced the hand of God to bring his riotous living to an abrupt halt.

Can you recall a time when you literally cried while disciplining your child, because you loved them so much, but couldn’t make sense of why they continued to rebel against your teachings? God has no desire to punish His children, but when we deliberately, and consistently disobey His Word, we force His hand to judge us.

Love God, and keep His commandments. This way, you won’t be so easily distracted by the things of this world, and your life will represent the God who gave it purpose.

Training Days

Deuteronomy 6:16-25

Parenting is one of the most challenging professions in the history of life, yet it offers the best benefits to all involved. While it’s easy to bring children into the world, it’s another story raising, and training them to be model citizens. Oftentimes, how we raise our children stems from our own upbringing, and many of the values and standards we apply to our kids, were what we once lived by under our parent’s wings. I notice daily at work, how little children tend to imitate their parents, or share some of their mannerisms, which is normal, as the child grows and adapts to their mother or father. It’s always wise to first develop a level of maturity and understanding, naturally and spiritually, before having children, because once they arrive, they come packed full of questions.

God instituted marriage for many purposes, and one such is having a solid foundation from which the seed of man could always be connected to, and nurtured from where it came from. The body of Christ was always responsible for training, teaching, and nurturing their children in the things of God, but trying to get modern-day kids to understand the Bible has become more challenging, due to the many distractions from schools, and unhealthy propaganda from various media sources. Children today, believe more of what they see on TV,  than the words from the mouths of their parents. It’s sad when your own child will believe a lie from a stranger, than a truth from their own blood. God knew this day would come, and urged His people, even in the days of Moses, to walk according to His way, and do good in His sight consistently, so that they could grow in knowledge and wisdom, and prosper in good times, and bad.

Many children suffer, because parents aren’t investing enough time in doing the things of God themselves. They expect their children to do all things right, yet they live fifty percent for God, and the other fifty percent living as they please. You can’t expect a child who sees you daily, to not notice your spiritual imbalance. Kids see everything, and some are bold enough to bring certain things to light, in front of their parents. God even uses children as a way to get their parent’s attention, in case they tend to veer too far out of bounds.

To those who have children, God expects you to know His Word, and understand it’s purpose, so that the knowledge you obtain, can be passed on to your children. Imagine a church, where children were educated on the Bible at home, so when they went to church or school, or listened to others bring forth messages, they could have a better understanding of what was being preached. Some children could even utilize the spirit of discernment, and tell when men are preaching false doctrine. Unfortunately, we spend too much time prepping and priming our children to be the next Kobe Bryant (may he rest in peace), or Patrick Mahomes, rather than soak them with the Word of God at an early age. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6)

Walk in love,

Ell
