Absolute Authority

John 5:19-24

After studying this lesson, it brought my mind back to a time when I was a young lad, nearing the end of the third grade school year. I wasn’t the smartest in the class, but I had earned the teachers respect by maintaining perfect attendance, behaving respectfully toward my classmates, and always making the honor roll. You can tell just by those merits, haters were gonna hate, but my parents raised their children to be respectful, and to take schooling serious. So, I did, and my scholarly conduct earned me a few extra perks with my teacher. One day during class, my teacher had to leave the room for something important, and left me in charge to monitor my classmates until she returned. Boy, why did she do that? Knowing I would report those who acted out of character in the teacher’s absence, there were some who deliberately acted a fool, just to get under my skin. What my fellow law breaking students failed to realize was, whatever I reported to the teacher, would be taken as if she had witnessed things with her own eyes. My words, would in essence be her words, and my judgments the same. Despite how anyone else felt about the teacher’s delegation, or that we were all the same age, my words were the authority in that classroom, until our teacher returned.

This flashback is kinda on par with the lesson’s text. God the Father, is the omnipotent, and sovereign ruler of all creation. He alone has the power to do as it pleases Himself. But in the earth, the Father left all judgment to the Son, and by this delegation, all men should honor the Son, just as they would the Father. So those who dishonor Jesus, are literally dishonoring God the Father also. Jesus, the Son, does the same works as the the Father. In addition, He has absolute and unlimited power and authority from God, to do as God directs Him. Just as my classmates were under the authority of our teacher, on behalf of little ole’ me, all men are to reverence Jesus, the Savior of the world, in the same way they honor and respect the God of all creation.

Plugged In To God

Proverbs 3:13-18

Any device that requires a power source to function, is useless without being connected to that same source. An iron will never get hot and steamy without being plugged into an outlet, which will prove ineffective at getting all the wrinkles from your clothes. A vacuum can’t pick up the dust and debris from your floor, except it also be plugged in to a source of power. I can give hundreds of examples of different things requiring power in order to produce, but I’m sure by now you get the point.

A Christian who is plugged into the source of God’s power, has the ability to produce good fruit consistently, while operating in God’s divine wisdom. Wisdom literally makes the believer a force to be reckoned with, in the earth! While some strive for silver, gold, and rubies, those who have direct connection to the wisdom of God, can achieve far more than the value of precious stones. Wisdom grants the people of God long life, riches and honor, pleasantness, peace, happiness, and eternal life. Is that not enough to make you excited?!

This world looks horrible, with all the past, and current events taking place, but the Word of God is still relevant, and we, the children of God, can continue to live out the pages of Scripture, even in this dying world. It’s obvious that suffering will come at times, but never rule out the opportunity for God to work wonders in our lives, as we stay connected to His unlimited source of DUNAMIS power!

Keep On Teaching

Mark 6:1-6

I wrote a blog nearly a year ago concerning the dangers of familiarity, and how many people have misjudged, and dishonored some whom they should have given more respect to. For example, growing up with siblings who eventually become famous, doesn’t change the fact that they are still your brother or sister. Therefore, you wouldn’t see them as the world would, and probably could care less about their fame. On the other hand, those who only know of famous people from listening to their music, or watching them on the big screen, tend to have a greater appreciation for their work.

After hearing about all the incredible miracles Jesus had performed outside of His hometown, from casting demons out of some, to raising others from the dead, it’s sad to know that those in His own community refused to accept the fact that He indeed was the Son of God. The text mentions, “And he marvelled because of their unbelief” (vs. 6a). After touring many different lands, spreading the goodness of His Father, Jesus no doubt expected to return home with a more appreciative welcome. Those He blessed while He journeyed through various lands were extremely grateful for the love Jesus had freely shown to them, but those in His own country could do no more than criticize, and doubt who He really was. This was so disheartening to point that Jesus could do no mighty works there, except lay His hands on a few sick folk, and heal them. Although the people in His town proved to be unthankful, Jesus made certain to not allow the people’s unbelief, keep Him from teaching.

While we live to please God, we’ll also experience doubt and unbelief from those we assume have our best interests at heart. But, after overcoming the hurt and pain of those you thought would support you, don’t allow their unbelief to keep you from spreading the goodness of the Gospel.

The Hearts Of Men

Mark 7:17-23

“Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not. And doth thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee? Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one” (Job 14:1-4). These were words spoken by Job, who was struggling to understand his extremely uncomfortable circumstances, but he also realized the importance of trusting God, even when life seems to be unfair.

At the start of the gate, we are born into this world at a disadvantage. Because of sin, men are born unclean, and Job recognized that it’s impossible to bring something clean, from an unclean thing. Knowing this fact should provoke the church to cling tight to God, because it’s easy to veer off into the path of unrighteousness, and attemp to walk without God’s leading.

By default, men are carnal in their thinking. In fact, the very heart of a man, without being filled with the Spirit of God, will eventually entertain areas of ungodliness that will defile their very essence. Such areas include, but are not limited to, evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye (sometimes, just the way you look at a person can come off as pure evil), blasphemy, pride, and foolishness. The text continues to read, “All these evil things come from within, and defile the man” (vs. 23).

It’s impossible to live a good life, or the popular “your best life now”, without God, because the flesh will never be satisfied, until it’s evil urges and desires have been fulfilled. Guard your heart against all things evil, and trust God to keep your heart filled with His love and grace. “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23 KJV).

Don’t Be Defiled

Mark 7:9-15

According to the Bible, to defile a thing is to make it common, unclean, render it unhallowed, or to profane it. This sounds horrible, and thus begs the question; why would anyone want to defile anything in the first place? Well, I’m glad you asked. If you haven’t noticed, there’s this dude roaming out there in the spiritual realm, and he’s constantly seeking to devour, our consume the souls of men and women left open to his influence. This wicked, vile, and manipulative evil genius, has been terrorizing men for thousands of years. Even after years of compiled evidence of satan’s demonic plan to destroy the church, its amazing how people still fall prey to his unholy, and unhealthy influences.

“…it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:16b). God the Father is holy, so those who have been engrafted into His family should be the same. Unfortunately, the adversary of the body of Christ, will use all his energy and effort, to ensure that the church becomes defiled, or unclean in the sight of God. Despite his endless efforts to hurt the church, satan can never pluck the children of God from His hand, but he can cause them to stumble from time to time. When we give in to the temptations of the enemy, we render ourselves unclean in the eyes of the holy God. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s guard ourselves against those who purposely try to turn us away from God. Remember to keep your light shining before men, and refuse to allow satan to defile you before your holy, and loving God.

Mindless Paparazzi

Mark 7:1-8

When people deliberately go out of their way to get on your nerves, how do you respond to them? When some of those same people join themselves with others who have nothing better to do than disturb your day, and make attempts to find fault in your life, when their own lives are torn up from the floor up, what method works best to get them to think twice about approaching you ever again? What do you do, when the people who seek to bring you down, confess to be followers of Christ? Believe it or not, Jesus dealt with these same issues more often than He would have liked to, but the way He handled His haters were always priceless moments.

I love Jesus so much! He always knew the perfect words to say to those who often made attempts to set Him up for failure. The scribes and Pharisees would usually follow Jesus and His disciples, in the same way the paparazzi hover around celebrities today. Rather than commit their hearts solely to obeying the commandments of God, they took more delight in holding the traditions of men. Thus, their worship to God was in vain, because their hearts were set on keeping to traditions, instead of sincere worship and obedience to God’s commands.

In our text, the Pharisees were so concerned about the disciples washing their hands before eating, that they failed to see how dirty their own hearts were toward the ways of godliness. Jesus confronted the pesky men with Scriptures, to counter their failed attempt to ensnare Him in their futile trap.

The Word of God is the best defense, against any trick or trap the enemy sets against us. The next time someone boldly accuses you of not following a tradition that means nothing to God, slap them with a few verses of Scripture, showing them that their souls are more important than dove-washed hands, and febreeze fragranced clothing.

My Endearing Heart

Colossians 2:1-5

I am proud of all those who have made Christ their reason for living. I am proud of all the men and women, who gave up their lives of sin, and decided to follow after the things of God. I am proud of everyone who willingly presents their bodies as living sacrifices to God daily, and do so without murmuring or complaining. I am proud of the fathers, who take charge in their homes; leading, teaching, and covering their wives and children in constant prayer. I am proud of the mothers, who understand their role in the family; to be the help, meet (suitable) for the husband, and submit to God’s order of the family. I am proud of the children who obey their parents, in the Lord; who will live long and prosperous, for their obedience. I am proud of those who lead congregations, operating in the fear and admonition of God, who teach the Word, and preach the Gospel boldly in season, and out of season. I am proud of those who remain faithful, even while working in spirituality hazardous environments. I am proud of the people who choose to be modest in their choice of clothing, and refuse to advertise their flesh to the world. I am proud of the men and women who have decided that living for God outweighs living for anything or anyone else. I am proud of those who sacrifice, so that others can benefit from their time, prayers, and other contributions. I am proud of all who are grateful for the blessings God gave to them, and don’t become jealous or envious of the blessings others receive. I am proud of those who remain strong, even during times of great loss. I am proud of those who mourn with those who mourn, and weep with those who weep. I am proud of the people who are not easily provoked, nor stricken with fear, from the biased and corrupt news, broadcasted throughout media streams. I am proud of the Saints, who boldly go where many refuse to, during the good times, and the bad (before the throne of grace). I am proud of the few who walk the narrow path, that leads to life. I am proud of the remnant, who suffer persecution for righteousness sake. I am proud of those, who will not bend or break in these end times. I am proud of those who refuse to quit, despite the pressure pressing against them. I am proud to be a Son of God; saved by grace, filled with His Spirit, and prepared to stand against the wiles of the enemy.

Sharp Truth

John 4:27-29, 39-42

When it comes to believing whether or not the Bible is true, there are two types of people groups usually involved. On the one hand, there are those who are willing, and on the other, there are those who are willingly ignorant. The Bible declares in 2 Peter 3:5, “For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:” When the truth of the Gospel is preached to any man, undefiled and unadulterated, either that person is left pierced in the heart from conviction, then willingly surrender themselves to God, or they purposely reject the truth, in favor of their own lusts and sinful desires. When a person truly seeks change, they’ll not pass up the opportunity to receive help. On the contrary, when a man is comfortable in his sinful state, it’ll be a struggle to pry him away from the lusts that have him bound.

Many in our text were changed, and convinced that the way of holiness was right. Some were converted from hearing the testimony of a woman, whereas many others were changed from hearing the message of the Gospel from the mouth of Jesus. Men try hard to win the hearts and minds of others by using different strategies and cunning ideas, but the Bible alone is convincing enough to prick the heart of anyone seeking a better life. Trust that God’s Word can perform its intended work on all men, and there’s no need to spice or butter it up, in order to make it more appealing. “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

From Doubters To Believers

Mark 5:35-43

On your last visit to the doctor, we’re you nervous and afraid, that the acting physician would mishandle you, because of his or her lack of ability? The last time you took your vehicle to get serviced, did you question the mechanics, whether or not they knew how to inspect and service your vehicle? Did you laugh at the foreman of the construction crew, who handled the blueprints of a new apartment community, doubting that he knew what he was planning to do? When we see a man or woman, wearing a certain uniform that caters to a specific profession, we automatically believe they are capable of performing the duties associated with their titles. We don’t often doubt whether doctors, fireman, or even automobile mechanics are able to fulfill their assigned duties, or not. Instead, we have trust and belief that when we see a man or woman in uniform, they are well able to do what they are assigned to.

In our text, we find where Jesus was doing the works of His Father; more specifically, He was operating in divine healing, and working to rid many of sickness, demon possession, and even death. Jesus had built a reputation that preceded Himself, thus causing many to seek Him for healing and deliverance.

After casting a demon out of a man, and healing a woman who had an issue of blood for twelve long years, Jesus continued on His way to heal a man’s sick daughter. As Jesus and those who followed neared the house of the sick damsel, some came from the house and told the ruler of the synagogue, “Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?” (vs. 35b). Naturally, this is a common response from those who have no faith in the Man in uniform, but Jesus was no ordinary man, and the works that followed after Him, should have been enough proof for everyone to believe in His incredible power.

To make this story a bit more interesting, as Jesus entered the house, and noticed a great noise of weeping and wailing, He kindly told those gathered, “the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.” (vs. 39b). The next verse reads, “And they laughed him to scorn.” This is very interesting for a few reasons, but more specifically makes me wonder, how can they turn from crying to laughing so suddenly. Well, during these times, weeping and wailing was more of a custom, and not real sorrow. So, it could quickly be turned to laughter in a moment. The people knew the young girl was dead, so their scornful laughter was more of unbelief, and mockery for Jesus’ confident statement. The nerve of some people, smh. Jesus wisely put everyone out of the room, except for those who refused to doubt His power and authority, then went to work.

The Bible never mentions the response of those who doubted Jesus after He brought the twelve year old girl back to life, but I’m certain from that day on, that laughing crew never doubted the power of Jesus ever again.

Sometimes in life, you’ll encounter people who will doubt that God can bring you out of situations that may seem dead. But, if you keep your faith in the power of God, and surround yourself with those who are positive and encouraging, God will come through for you, and turn your doubters into believers.

The Golden Years

Luke 2:36-38

After the just and devout Simeon was finally pleased after seeing the child sent by God, to save the world, another interesting character was noted in Scripture, as one who long awaited to see the manifested Savior. Anna, the prophetess, was very old, yet thought it necessary to devote her life to service in the temple, after losing her husband following seven years of faithful marriage. While many women would probably have remarried, and chosen to live the family life, Anna decided that her life would be more fulfilled, serving God night and day in the temple.

Moments after Simeon had blessed Joseph and Mary, Anna came in unto the Christ child, gave thanks to the Lord, then “spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem” (vs. 38b).

The birth of Jesus was indeed a great deal, but being able to witness the child was a moment few would ever forget. Like Simeon and Anna, we too should serve the Lord all the days of our lives. Simeon was obedient to God despite not knowing when the Holy Spirit’s words would be fulfilled, and Anna dedicated her life to service for God, even after losing her husband. Will you stay true to God, even when things in your life don’t turn out well? Or, will you give up serving God, the moment you face a hardship in life?

Commit your works unto the Lord, and allow His Spirit to guide you, even into your latter years. Be steadfast in the Lord, and tell of His goodness to all who seek salvation.
