Turn It Up!!!

1 Peter 4:7-11

During my adolescent period of development, I would often hear the elderly Saints say, “be careful how you treat people, because everything you do is being recorded”. When I first heard those words, I assumed they meant the government was secretly infiltrating the privacy of mankind (well, we know that to be certain in the 21st century), but they were referring to Revelation 20:12, which reads, “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.” What we do in the earth will someday be weighed by God, and the works we perform today, will determine where we will spend eternity.

Knowing that this present state of the world is nearing its end, it’s high time that the church increase their desire to please God. Believers are slowly falling by the wayside, and those who remain loyal to the Father, are losing their passion for soul-winning, and edification of the body. One of the main reasons many have lost their zeal for love is, suffering and persecution weighs heavy on their shoulders. When we struggle to make ends meet, or even stay healthy, it plays with our minds, to the point we consider throwing in the towel. But, God gives us strength and wisdom daily, to push past the pain, and endure those seasons of trials.

The church today must continue to show love to the world, and each other, because our struggles aren’t as intense as they were to the disciples, or the early church, but despite the fact that we do face hard times, we must continue in real love, while doing things from the heart, not from obligation alone. It’s one thing to tell someone you love them, but it makes a greater difference when you show your love with actions instead.

It’s time for the body of Christ to consistently walk in humility, spread unconditional love to all, show hospitality without murmuring or complaining, speak only the words that were inspired by God, minister according to the ability God instilled in you, and do all else with the mindset that God is deserving of all glory. Doing our part will represent the church, as God intended in these last days. Many of us exercise with great intensity, perform duties at work beyond what’s expected, or give all of ourselves to those things we have a passion for, but when will we realize how important it is, to give all of ourselves to the purposes of God?

The Prayer Of Faith

James 5:13-20

One of the most sound words of advice acknowledged by Luke in the New Testament says “that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.” These words were mentioned right before Jesus began to teach the parable of the “Unjust Judge”. If you’re not familiar with this story, it can be found in Luke 18:1-8. Christ understood, keeping in constant communication with the Father, was essential to maintaining the right balance of natural, and holy living. God knows all, created all, and understands all, so the more we come to Him with whatever issue, the better we’ll understand His purpose for allowing it, and how to handle it.

Our text also gives a powerful word of wise counsel, as it states, “the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (vs. 16b). While prayer involves communicating with God, in order for God to hear, or even acknowledge your words, a couple of things must first be dealt with. First of all, we should always approach God with a pure heart, and good intentions. If there is any sin in our hearts, we should confess our faults, and the Lord will save us. Second, when we pray, it must be done in faith. Praying without faith is, praying amiss, and God doesn’t acknowledge unfaithful requests. Many times, people come before God with doubt, fear, unbelief, or discouragement, but these things must be put aside, so that one won’t lose heart when seeking to receive an answer from the Father.

Because of Christ, we have a right to approach God, despite with the enemy says or does to convince us otherwise. Prayer is powerful and super effective, and when it becomes a customary pattern, the life of those who pray will become increasingly focused, and appealing in the eyes of God.

I Swear!

Matthew 5:33-37

Growing up in my neighborhood, when disputes broke out between the fellas, to convince someone that they were serious about the point they were attempting to make, they would say things like, “I swear before God”, or “I put my mother on it!” These phrases were used as a means to express the seriousness one felt, concerning their stance on the matter at hand.

Swearing wasn’t something that started in the 80’s, but was a way by which men made oaths, even during Bible days. According to biblical definitions, to swear is to affirm, promise, or threaten with an oath. Making vows, or promises are taken serious by God, and should not be done with false intentions. In our text, Matthew acknowledged Jesus’ words on how the ole’ school men of their day, would often perform oaths to the Lord, many of which they failed to keep. But, Jesus recommended that all men refrain from swearing altogether; whether it be by heaven, earth, or the holy city of Jerusalem.

God prefers that we prove what we believe about Him through our works, and not our words. Oftentimes, we speak more idle words, while doing little to back them up. To those who are in the body of Christ, keep all communication holy, acceptable to God, and to the point.

The apostle Paul taught his spiritual son Timothy, “But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness”. The more we speak words that are unprofitable for our spiritual growth and development, the more we’ll increase our chance to make mistakes. Keep yourselves aligned with the will of God, and keep your conversations pure, so that the words of Scripture can flow freely from your lips, and save those who are lost.

To The End

1 Thessalonians 3:6-13

At the end of every race is, a finish line. Whether there are cars, people, or even horses aligned at the starting point, races typically produce only one victor. All who are participants in a race, train extensively, and strive relentlessly to overcome those who are placed against them, but to those who finish first, all their labor was proven effective.

The Bible teaches, the life we live on the earth, is comparable to a race. The writer of the book of Hebrews helps us understand the race of life this way: “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,” (Heb 12:1). According to this passage, there is a definite end to this life, but to those who endure unto the end (lay aside the weight of sin, while striving to live holy), the Savior will confirm or validate their hearts, and make them blameless before God. What better reward is there on earth, that can compare to an eternity with the Creator of all things?

The apostle Paul was well aware of the importance of living a holy life in the earth, and was pleased to hear that the people he left Timothy to watch over in Thessalonica, were indeed growing and maturing in the things of the Lord. Running the race of life according to God’s standard, involves affliction, distress, and persecution, but Paul and those who accompanied him, gained strength, simply from hearing that the church was prospering. Good news can do a lot to help motivate those who may be going through a hard season, and knowing someone you love has been blessed, can work wonders in your life, as well as theirs. Paul prayed earnestly, to return to those he loved, so that he could fine tune the areas of spirituality they needed help with.

Unlike conventional races, where one competes against the other, the race that the church has been given, involves every member supporting each other, all the way to the finish line.

Listen, And Live

Jeremiah 38:1-6

When God spoke a word, in the scriptures, it was always in the best interest of those whom His words were directed, to take heed, and do as He commanded. God gave instruction, direction, or warning, so that those whom He called to serve His purpose, would fulfill what He expected from them, without distraction or delay.

In those times when men refused to follow God’s direct instructions, a hard lesson was usually associated with their disobedience. One such example can be found in the book of Numbers. Despite all his favor, fame, and miraculous works, Moses never stepped foot in the land of promise, due to his disobedience. During the time when Moses had led the children of Israel into the desert of Zin, where no food or water was to be found, the people had become hungry and parched. Things were so bad, that even Miriam, Moses’ sister, died, and was buried there. So, Moses and his brother Aaron prayed to God earnestly, and God appeared to them, then gave Moses a simple instruction; “Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink”. Obeying God couldn’t get any more simpler than that… right? Unfortunately, Moses had become so frustrated with the complaining people, that rather than speak to the rock as God commanded, he literally whacked it, not once, but TWICE, out of disgust for the rebellious people. Shame on you Moses lol. He was almost there too!

Our text gives another example of the importance of adhering to the voice of the Lord. God had given a word to the prophet Jeremiah, to warn the people of the city to flee toward the Chaldeans, so they might live, because their city would soon be overtaken by the Babylonian army. By this time in Scripture, Jeremiah had proven himself to be a true prophet of the living God, but his words weren’t received well by the princes who were gathered in his presence also. Rather than take heed to God’s life-saving warning, the men convinced the king, that Jeremiah was only weakening the hands of the military, as well as the people in the city, by uttering such hurtful words. The naive king gave in to the cries of the princes, and had the prophet Jeremiah thrown into the dungeon. To give a shortened version to the conclusion of this story, God took care of His prophet, and rescued him from certain death, but as for king Zedekiah and those who remained in the city, well… let’s just say they never saw the light of day, ever again (the details of their judgment are extremely graphic).

When God gives instruction to us today (as He expects us to obey the Bible), it would be wise for us to read, hear, study, and take heed. God knows what’s ahead of us, and desires that we not be overtaken with sin. But, we must trust that His Word is true, and willingly do those things He asked of us, in His Word.

The Untamed Member

James 3:1-12

When God created man, He made him with very unique attributes and abilities, no other created being has. Of those unique abilities, man has been able to tame every kind of beast, bird, serpent, and things in the deep blue sea. Consider how great and massive some of the animals are on land, and in the oceans, and how incredible it is for man, in his stature, to tame something more massive than himself.

Man in his wisdom, has the ability to manipulate and control animals, and even influence them to do as he commands, but with all his wisdom, knowledge, and power of influence over birds and beasts, man lacks the ability to tame his own tongue. Yes, that little “pink tornado”, is capable of stirring up all manner of trouble. Lions, tigers, bears, and whales are all more massive than man, yet he is able to tame them, but that little member, nestled in his mouth, boasts great things, kindles fires, and is a world of iniquity.

Those who bear the name of Christ, have the responsibility of using the tongue to bless God, and hold only good conversations. The words that proceed from the mouths of the Saints, should only offer strength, encouragement, and edification to all who would hear them. God shuns those who maintain improper use of the tongue, while defiling themselves with ungodly conversations. There are some who seemingly bless God one minute, then curse their brother twenty minutes later. This ought not be the case among those who are born-again believers. Can you find apples hanging from an orange tree, or pick grapes from a tomato vine? I highly doubt you will, and you should not hear ungodly speech coming from the mouths of godly people. On human strength alone, the tongue cannot be tamed, but when a vessel is under the influence of the Holy Ghost, the tongue will be restricted to speak those things that are pleasing to the Father.

If you ever find yourself holding conversations that aren’t true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report, check to see whether or not you’ve strayed away from the Spirit. Only in God, do we have the power to overcome our flesh, and walk after the Spirit. The tongue indeed, is little member, but if left uncontrolled, it can set the whole world on fire!

The Best Gifts

1 Corinthians 12:27-31

During Christmas time, millions of dollars are spent on various items, that are shared as gifts amongst family, friends, coworkers, and even strangers. Although the reason for the Christmas celebration is to acknowledge the birth of Jesus, American society has turned the season into a gift-giving frenzy. Children and adults alike, expect to receive good things from those who love them, and they render the same in return. While gifts offered to the receiver offer little benefit to others, the best gifts are those that can bless multiple people.

This same concept can be seen in the foundation of the early church. The apostle Paul taught the Corinthian believers the importance of the various functions in the church. Although the people were considered one body, they all had different functions. God organized the church in a way that all members can contribute, and exercise their gifts, without feeling as if their lives are meaningless. Paul was also detailed in dissecting the various functions in the church, and stressed that the people should covet earnestly the “best gifts”. The best of anything, is usually something that can help more than one person. In the case of the Corinthian church, the apostle Paul desired that the members seek to exercise gifts that will benefit not only themselves, but also bring edification to the entire body of Christ.

It’s easy to covet those gifts that may seem to bring attention to oneself, but as children of God, we are commanded to walk in humility, while keeping our focus on peace, love, and unity amongst the body.

With One Accord

Acts 2:1-12

One of the most iconic moments in Bible history was, the day of Pentecost, recorded in the book of Acts. When the day of Pentecost was “fully come”, this was referencing the fiftieth day from the waving of the sheaf of the first-fruits. According to the book of Leviticus, Pentecost was one of the original eight feasts of the Lord, or holy convocations, which were to be proclaimed in their appropriate season. God appointed times for His people to gather and offer sacrifices and praises for all that He had done for them. This was important to keep the minds of the people focused on the source of their peace, prosperity, and protection.

Our text picks up a short while after the first business meeting of the church, and the election of the replacement disciple (Matthias). During this gathering of about 120 men, the Bible mentions all these men were in one place, and with one accord. In other words, none of the men gathered were lukewarm, shady, doubtful, unconcerned, nor uninterested in God’s affairs. Instead, they were all united in faith, love, and prayer. Can you pause for a moment, and imagine if this was the state of the church today. If every man and woman, who gathers together in the name of the Lord, were always sharing the same mind, will, and motivations, how do you think the earth would look today? Well, we have an absolutely amazing experience that takes place in the verses of our text.

Being of the same mind, and gathered together in unity, provoked the almighty God, to literally invade the space where the men were, and fill them with His Spirit, while unlocking the ability for them to speak a language they never spoke. This was done, so that all the nations of the earth that would also come to witness God’s power, could be ministered to in their native tongue. God knew, many would come together to join the ever-growing church, so He (in His infinite wisdom), was fully aware that those whom He called, needed to capable of reaching all who would show up. Unlike men, who think mostly in “the now”, God sees the end of a thing, and knows how to prepare His people to handle it, before it manifests.

Although the modern church seems to have lost its once renowned potency and effectiveness in the earth, the power of God is still readily available, to invade the lives of those who will gather together in one mind, one heart, and one Spirit. Never underestimate the power of unity, because doing so could prohibit you from reaching your full potential in God.

And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold… don’t become one of them.

Stay On Track

Psalm 119:169-176

During my early years of life, I always found trains to be a fascinating means of transport. Watching those intricate machines glide across the tracks while waiting in the back seat of my parent’s car, was always a thrill to witness. I would often get scolded by my grandmother, because whenever I would ride with her while going over a train track, I always felt the need to add a few extra bounces in the van, even after we had rumbled over the tracks.

Trains have one mission, and that’s to get its cargo from point A, to point B. While technology has made for more efficient transportation, there are rare occasions when a train will get derailed from its track. As strange as it may seem, dealing trains is rather easy. In fact, the most common way is to drive it too fast for the rail position. The wheels can ride up the side of a rail on a curve at high speed, and if the alignment is too wide or narrow it will cause the train to dip, and rise up off the rails. That’s a scary thing to witness. The process of placing a derailed train back on its track is rather tedious, and requires hard labor, but once the train is placed back into its proper position, it can then proceed to carry out its assigned duties.

The church can be compared to a train. While the train is set on a track, and assigned to carry resources from place to place, believers are also positioned in God’s will, to carry His message of the Gospel from heart to heart. Oftentimes, a believer will veer off track, and end up in places and positions God didn’t intend for them to be in. But, getting back on track with God, requires one to first realize they are out of position, then cry out to Him for His salvation. It’s unfortunate how many only consider God’s grace, after they’ve fallen, rather than cling to it before a fall, in order to remain on track.

Never allow yourself to stray away from God’s leading, and commit to doing His will, so that you’ll always be in the right position to fulfill your mission. Remain consistent in God’s Word, stay on track, and choo choo nonstop, until you reach your final destination.

Dead Men Walking

Colossians 3:1-11

Have you considered the seriousness of death lately? If not, could it be, you’re too consumed in the affairs of this present world, until you forget to take note that someday you’ll cease to exist in this realm? During my nearly 39 years traversing this planet, I’ve discovered there are three things in this life that are guaranteed; toothaches, taxes, and death. The Bible teaches that by man came death, and its because of the first Adam, our physical bodies must be done away with. That may have sounded a bit sad and gloomy, but, death is actually the beginning of eternal life. In fact, according to Scripture, in order to obtain eternal life in Christ, one must put to death the “old man”, and all the ways and behaviors associated with him.

The old man represents the sinful nature you once submitted to, before surrendering your life to Christ. Now don’t get it twisted, we all have a past, and would be ashamed if God played how we use to be on a jumbotron, for all to see. I find it disheartening, at times, when I witness those who claim to have God in their hearts, judge others who are guilty of committing the sins they were once delivered from. Rather than have compassion on those who have fallen, while remembering their own deliverance, some people (with their short-term memory) easily forget how God reached down to save them one day.

Our old nature favored behaviors including lying, fornication, inordinate affection, filthy communication, malice, wrath, and all manner of disobedient deeds. Once we had mortified, or literally put those behaviors to death, we were then able to put on the “new man”, which was renewed in knowledge, after the image of the Creator. That’s sooooooooooooo awesome! God waits for us to give up evil, so that we can then put on good. It’s all up to us, and God will never force us into anything. We have the liberty to choose whom we’ll serve, but sadly, many have, and will choose the evil way, over the good.

As we walk in our newness, we are commanded to set our affections on things that are relevant to God, and not on things contrary to His will and purpose, because as I often mention, this world will soon be destroyed, and only what we’ve invested in heavenly matters will be safely secured in the next life. Die to the flesh, but live in the Spirit.
