John 17:13-24
The world hates Christians for many reasons, but most importantly because they don’t share the same values. Worldly values are centered around pride, selfishness, and ego, whereas Christians live by godly standards including love, selflessness, and humility.
Although men are born in sin and shaped in iniquity, according to Psalm 51:5, what a person is exposed to, usually determines their life outcome. Many are born into families that are unexposed to the truth of God, and their lives are influenced by what the world portrays on TV and other media sources. It’s easy to be influenced by the world, especially when a person hasn’t been exposed to the Word, so they aren’t given a fair chance to discern between the two. Conversely, children who are raised in Christian homes and go off to college have a 75 percent chance of being turned away from the truth. The evil of the world is very influential, because it promotes those things people desire most; money, relevance, and happiness. But God desires that men grow in the knowledge of His Word, so they’ll develop an understanding of the true purpose of life.
In our text, Jesus prayed for His disciples because all He gave to them from the Father, caused them to be hated by the world. Like a good shepherd, Jesus prayed that God keep the disciples from the evil that would come against them in the world. Jesus didn’t limit His prayer to the disciples, but He extended His prayer to those who would believe on Him in the future (you and I). Yes, Jesus prayed for us, before we were even born. How awesome is that?!
I’ve been writing on prayer the past few lessons, because prayer is powerful and necessary, even when it seems like God isn’t checking His voicemail. The prayer of oneness Jesus prayed in the text should be continued amongst the church today, because unity is key, and the strength of God’s people. In the same way a tightly wound fist can deliver a more solid punch, when the church is united, their effectiveness in the world will have a greater impact.
