The Perfect Gift

Isaiah 52:13-53:3

During Christmas time, birthdays, or special events, gifts are given to show love and appreciation to those deserving of kindness and generosity. While the gift itself is the main thing, many take precious time to adorn the gift as beautifully as possible. Gift wrapping has become as popular in our society as the gift itself, and millions of dollars are spent annually, for gift bags, wrapping paper, and other decorations that beautify the package. When all is said and done, the beautiful arrangement is meaningless, except for the gift that’s placed inside.

As God looked upon the earth, and considered the ways of men, how they continued in their insolence and disobedience, He prepared a gift to send to the earth, so that mankind could be redeemed. Unlike men, who spend time trying to make the outer appearance of the gift look as attractive as possible, God sent Jesus to the earth with no form or comeliness, and no beauty that any should desire Him. Why would God not send His only begotten Son arrayed in beauty, splendor, and majesty? If Jesus had come to the earth with the face of an angel and the body of a god, I’m certain men and women (especially) would have flocked to hear Him without question, right? Jesus came to save men from sin, not partake in beauty contests. Even in his common state, the prophet Isaiah stated that men would despise and reject Jesus, and He would bear many sorrows, so I highly doubt giving the Savior good looks would keep Him in good standing with the scribes and Pharisees, after delivering His sharp and controversial message.

The gift God gave the world may not have been the most beautiful on the outside, but it’s value is higher than anything we place a price tag on. Salvation cannot be bought with money, or bargained by trade. Only through confession and belief, can the gift of God be obtained by men. This precious gift, that man despises even today, came at great cost. Most gifts given to others are usually purchased on Amazon, or from a store of choice, but the gift of salvation came from suffering, abuse, betrayal, denial, blood, pain, sorrow, tears, shame, rejection… sigh.

Do you appreciate the gift God gave you, in His Son? We don’t deserve God’s precious gift, yet He gave it to us regardless. Prove your love to the Father by living a life that mirrors Christ, and learn to appreciate the gift of salvation more and more each day.

Gifted!

1 Peter 4:7-11

For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, but all have also been given the opportunity to be forgiven, redeemed, and brought into right standing with the Father, through the Son. Without Jesus, our lives would remain jacked up forever, but because of His love and grace, we have been adopted into God’s royal family.

Being in the family of God comes with amazing perks that are impossible to obtain otherwise. God gave the church His Spirit, to guide them in all truth, along with a unique gift, that is to be used to edify and build up the church. Gifts come without repentance, and all who operate in them, must do so with earnest, zealous, and abundant love.

The grace of God is diverse, and has distributed all types of gifts, by which the children of God function. The apostle Paul mentioned these gifts among the Corinthians, “For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit. To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.” (1 Corinthians 12:8-11). Paul also mentioned, that despite our different gifts and operations, God works in them all. It’s not our place to use God’s gifts for vain glory, instead, all glory belongs to the Lord.

If you’re uncertain what your gift is, pray and ask God to reveal it to you, because everyone was created wonderfully, and has something special to contribute in the earth. So, use your gift to bring glory and honor to God, and do your best to work hand-in-hand with those expressing their gifts as well.

Precious Oil

John 12:1-7

During one of many plots to kill Jesus, the Son of God was wise enough to avoid his pursuers, until the appropriate time of fulfillment. In our text, Jesus kept Himself concealed from His accusers, then went to visit His friends in Bethany. As His time on the earth neared its end, Jesus thought it necessary to commune with those close to Him. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, were near to Jesus’ heart, and offered Him food and rest, during his stay in their town.

One evening, after supper was prepared, Martha began to serve Jesus and Lazarus who sat at the table, but Mary had a different gift for the Savior. Rather than bring food or items essential to supper, Mary brought to Jesus an expensive ointment, or perfume, and poured all of it over the feet of Jesus, then wiped them with her hair. While Jesus acknowledged that Mary saved this ointment for this very moment, the Bible doesn’t mention how her siblings reacted to her act. But, it vividly expressed the heart of one, Judas, who followed Jesus closely. Rather than see the significance of Mary’s blessed action, Judas revealed, through his words, the true intentions of his wicked heart. In his own words, Judas said, “Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?” (vs. 5). While his words seemed to offer genuine concern for the poor, his true heart’s intent was the total opposite. John writes that Judas cared nothing for the poor, because he was a thief, who would even steal from the money bag which belonged to the disciples. The whole time he followed Jesus, Judas was dishonest in his secret, evil doings. So, thinking he actually cared about Mary’s oil being wasted, and being used in a different way is almost laughable.

We will never understand everyone’s relationship with God. Where some can give seemingly inexpensive sacrifices, others can freely give up those things that are extremely valuable to them. Never judge how man chooses to bless God, rather focus on keeping your own heart pure, so that your sacrifices can be acceptable to God as well.

Without Love

1 Corinthians 13

Can you imagine what this world would be like, if love was nonexistent? The state of this present world is far from ideal, but remove love from it, and this earth would instantly become unimaginably more dark and corrupt. Without love, nothing would make sense. Life would be lived for vain purposes, gifts would be used to no avail, and the feelings that come with pure acts of love, would never be enjoyed.

Without love, there’s no need to prophesy, preach, teach, admonish, rebuke, or speak with tongues. All is futile, when love is absent from the equation. Love is what makes our deeds and actions meaningful. When we do things in love, it becomes more than a simple act of giving, but an opportunity to spread the goodness of God to all. God is love, so what we do for others must be done with the intentions of pleasing Him, and not ourselves.

Our text vividly expresses the extent to which God’s love is portrayed. We learn from the scriptures, that love is patient, kind, humble, respectful, generous, courteous, compassionate, caring, solid, true, pure, understanding, selfless, giving, and durable. Love is the thread that combines every line of text in the Bible. It’s because of love, God sent His Son to the earth, to give man another chance to enjoy the benefits he willingly handed over to the enemy. Love keeps us strong, in times when we feel like giving up. Love motivates us to meet every challenge of life, head on. Love inspires us to commit our ways to the Lord, while ignoring all temptation that tries to distract us. Love gives us a reason for living, and helps us understand the real purpose of life. Love never fails, never gives up, and always makes us better. Live your life in love, knowing that the love you abide in, is very love of God Himself.

Keep It Simple

1 Corinthians 14:13-19

Doing ministry and works for the kingdom of God, are very noteworthy opportunities. God is the creator of all things, and working to fulfill His purpose is a great thing! I can remember as a child, I always wanted to go out on Saturday mornings, to help my dad and brothers mow lawns. I was always denied that privilege, because I was too small, and would probably hurt myself, or someone else. But, when the opportunity came to assist my dad with his side business, I jumped at the chance to finally contribute to bringing funds to our home. When we do works for the kingdom, it’s so that all members of the body of Christ can be blessed. There’s no secret to what Christians do, and all things are done for edification, and encouragement. For this reason, there should never be a time, when a preacher, teacher, prophet, or anyone who exercises their gift in the body, do so for self gain. Paul mentioned in our text, he can speak with tongues (multiple human languages) more than all of the Corinthian church members, but he would rather speak only five words the people could grasp and understand, rather than 10,000 words that would leave them beyond confused.

Never get so caught up in your spiritual gift, talent, or ability, until you lose focus on God’s purpose to help others, and not hinder them. Take pride in all the great things God has placed inside of you, and be careful not to abuse, misuse, or not use His gifts, but operate in them as they were purposed to be used.

Save Me!!!

Isaiah 49:1-7

If you were swimming in the ocean, and was caught off guard by an undertow current, would you ignore the help of an experienced lifeguard, swimming to your rescue? If you were severely injured in an automobile accident, and was unable to move, would you tell the ambulance and rescue team, you’ll figure things out on your own? When we’re in trouble, we rarely turn down the opportunity to receive assistance, especially if it’s rendered free of charge. Men and women are in position, in various areas of life, to aid and assist those, who require help. Whether a person was involved in a car accident, work injury, burglarized, or whatever the case, there are always people at the ready, to meet their need.

The world was once drowning in sin, and needed a savior, so God prepared for Himself, a body, by which to come to the earth, and redeem man back to Himself. For various ungodly reasons, many have refused to accept God’s help, and chose to figure things out on their own. These people fail to realize the gravity of the situation they’re in, and can ill afford to die in their sin, yet God offers limited time for them to reach out, and take hold of His hand.

Refusing to accept God’s free gift of salvation, is equivalent to the person rejecting the lifeguard’s help, while being pulled underwater, by an undertow current. Sin is real, and the devil cares nothing for men’s souls. For this reason, he attacks the children of God relentlessly, and won’t stop until his judgment is executed. Snap out of your world of selfishness and pride, and reach out to grab hold of God’s saving hand. Don’t allow the waves of sin to pull you under, into an eternity of sorrow.

Keep your chin up… it’s easier to see Heaven that way,

Do You Love Me?

Isaiah 1:11-17

Would you accept gifts from someone who said they loved you, but was inconsiderate, full of sin, weighed down in iniquity, evil, corrupt, rebellious, and turned their back on you? Whether it was something you desired, or simply something seemingly valuable, would you find it difficult to refuse? Love has been abused since the beginning of time, when men claimed to love God, yet their lifestyles proved otherwise. Even today, many have a limited understanding of what love represents, and cater only to the feeling and emotional aspects of it. The definition of love is vast, yet understandable, but many fail to take time to delve into the core of its meaning.

God is love, and when the term is used, God must be at the root of its intended purpose. When I tell someone I love them, it’s not because I get butterflies in my tummy, or goosebumps on my skin, but I understand they are a precious creation, made by God, and deserve to be treated as Christ Himself. I’d be willing to make sacrifices, and assist as necessary to make their lives better, in an effort to prove that the love I spoke with my lips, was more than mere words alone. Love is action, and our works reveal whether our professed love is genuine, or counterfeit.

Our text reveals God’s feelings toward those who abuse love, and attempt to justify ill actions with gifts. Israel had rebelled against God, yet still believed He would accept their offerings and sacrifices. To their surprise, their sinful behavior kindled the Lord’s anger, to the point He refused to accept any gift, offering, sacrifice, feast, or anything that brought Him delight in the past. Unfortunately, their offerings were vain and unable to please God, so He commanded them to put away their evil doings, and rather than present vain offerings to Him, show genuine love to those around them instead.

When you use the word love, what are your intentions behind it? Is it a tool you use to manipulate others, in order to get what you want, or do you understand the true definition of God’s love?

I.O.U.

2 Chronicles 7:1-6

When rendering to God sacrifices of praise, offering, or thanksgiving, how much is enough? After considering all the things God has done, and is yet doing in your life, do you think it’s even possible to repay what He’s done for you? Is there any amount of money, burnt offering, or other gift you can offer to God, in exchange for one simple breath? By now, I’m certain you have a good idea of the answer to those questions. God is beyond awesome, and He does things for us, that no one else can do, so limiting our gratitude to Him is very unwise.

Scheduling time to pray, and reverence God, is essential to the body of Christ, and helps the believer maintain focused faith in God, and not on things of the world. In the same way unborn babies are connected to their mother’s placenta by an umbilical cord, where oxygenated blood and nutrients can be transferred to the baby, believers are tied to God through salvation (redemption), and prayer, with thanksgiving, are means by which God supplies the needs of His children.

When we pray, in faith, and not wavering or doubting, God hears us, and schedules our answer according to His timing. When king Solomon “had made an end of praying”, God responded instantly! Fire came down from Heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and sacrifice he had placed before the Lord. This was a sign that God was pleased with Solomon’s prayer and sacrifice, and deemed it acceptable. Solomon had done well in leading the construction of the Temple of God, and all the materials used to build the house of God calculated to an estimation of a few BILLION dollars! How much have you freely given in offerings during your lifetime? I doubt my contributions come close to what Solomon gave, but when you give from the heart, God accepts it, no matter the amount.

How much is enough when giving to God? Well, Paul said in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” In other words, God looks not on the amount of what you offer Him, but at the heart in which it’s given. We can’t pay God back for what He does for us with things, but we can offer holy and acceptable lifestyles to Him, which is our reasonable service.

Reconciliation through Jesus Christ

Romans 5:6-11

What is it about you, that makes God love you so much? Why is it, that whenever you make a mistake, or turn against God, He gives you countless opportunities to repent, and come back to Him, rather than erase your existence from the face of the earth, like He did nations in the past? The obvious reason God continues to care for His people is, His love is endless, and not expressed based on condition. Love embodies the very nature of God, and this love was exhibited vividly in the form of His only begotten Son, Jesus, the Anointed One.

If God was like men, frail and emotional, there would probably be a handful of people left on the earth today, because He would have zapped everyone who rebelled against Him to smithereens. But, God knows the end, from the beginning, and sent Christ to be the means by which our sins were forgiven, so that the bond man once had with Him, could be reestablished.

Not only is the church justified to God by faith, but we are also justified by the blood of Jesus, and reconciled to God by His death. As the world turns, many continue to ignore the fact that the wrath of God will rain down upon the earth, but those who have been redeemed by Christ, and have accepted God’s free gift of salvation, will be saved from wrath, through Christ. It’ll be a sad day for all who are the enemies of God; those who refused to accept Christ as their Savior, when God’s wrath comes, but Christ died so eternal shame and punishment could be avoided by all who believe on Him.

If Jesus sacrificed His life, while men were yet sinners and enemies to God, imagine how much He’ll do after we’ve been reconciled to the Father. Knowing that we have security in our eternal destination with God, should provoke all disciples to joy in Him, through Jesus, by whom we have received the atonement.

Walk in love,

Ell
