The folly of riches

Psalm 49:1-4, 16-20

The three most prominent desires of the carnal man are money, power, and success. Worldly men believe the more money they attain will, in turn, gain them power and influence, which will create opportunities for them to be successful.

To those who lack knowledge and understanding of the will of God, this seems like the best method to becoming successful in this life. But the problem many seem to forget is that no matter how much money, influence, or personal achievements you acquire here on earth, it has no relevance after you die.

There are four things mentioned in this psalm that money can’t buy: 1 redemption for a brother’s soul, 2 ransom for one’s own soul, 3 eternal life for the soul, 4 immortality for the body. Our souls are way more valuable than the price of money, so it’s unwise to commit our lives to it.

It is folly for a man to seek only to build his name and family greatness, because his honor will one day perish, but if we crave after those things which are relevant to God, He will literally add all the things we need to be successful – including money.

Rather than laboring for riches, consider a few of the following to commit your energy to; help the poor, win lost souls, support those who are weak or mourning, build up and encourage the saints, try not to be a burden or stumbling block to anyone, fix your life and make it acceptable to God.

Many are afraid and intimidated by rich men, but there’s no need to fear because they can’t carry any more to the grave than a poor man, their glory will vanish with them, and their bodies perish just like animals.

Put your hope and trust in God, and allow Him the chance to prove to you that He’s everything you need, and more…

Seek peace,

Ell
