Genesis 24:45-51
We live in a time where men bask in the hopes of fate, chance, and coincidence. Some believe certain things are destined to happen, or turn out a certain way, whereas others are under the impression that events or circumstances occur without apparent causal connection. I’m a firm believer in the fact that God had a predestined will for the lives of everyone who existed. After sin introduced itself in the earth, well those plans began to take unapproved turns. Things happen based on the decisions we make. God has a plan for us, but we decide whether His plan will be applied in our lives based on how we respond to His Word. When we live in obedience to God, we will more than likely walk the paths He sets for us, and encounter the people He planned for us to meet. But when we live outside of the realm of holiness, we find ourselves connecting to people and places we wish we had never crossed paths with. I’m sure by now you’ve thought of some people and places you wish you could delete from your memory.
This lesson continues the story of Isaac and the search for his wife. The key character in this text is Eliezer, Abraham’s head servant. This guy was bold and keen in the ways of holiness, because he was privileged to be under the house of the Father of Faith, Abraham. While on the search for the wife of his master’s son, he prayed to God the perfect scenario, that if granted, would prove to himself who Isaac’s wife should be. This is important to note, because sometimes our prayers aren’t answered because we pray amiss, or outside of what God desires for us. But this servant prayed according to the will that God had for Abraham’s son, Isaac. Just as Eliezer had prayed, God allowed it to happen exactly how he wanted it to. This was very reassuring to the servant, because his sole purpose was to carry out his master’s will, and God honored it.
This is a great lesson for us to follow as well, not only in praying for relationships, but life in general. When we live following the ways of Christ, what we ask God for will always be granted, if our desires are in alignment with what He desires for us. God knows what we need, and when we need it, before we even conjure it in our minds. While we’re seeing through the glass darkened, God sees the whole picture. For this simple reason, everyone should put their total trust in the Lord. Why place all your confidence in men and women who can’t even control their own lives, while God knows the very number of hairs on their heads?
Abraham and his servant knew that God was in control of all things, so trusting Him in their daily affairs wasn’t a hard thing to do. When you pray, be sure that your desires aren’t based on selfish motives. Instead, consider everyone you’re connected to, and ask God to make you better for the purposes of being a blessing to others. If you’re praying for a spouse, know before you pray, the real reason you seek marriage. If you need wisdom and guidance for whatever reason, make certain it’s so that God can get the glory out of it. “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men” (Colossians 3:23). “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).
Seek peace,
Ell
